Is my BNP level of 815 a sign of worsening heart failure?

Hi doctor,

I have just gotten my test results for blood work, and my brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is 815pg/mL. I was diagnosed with heart failure 10 years back, but I stopped taking my medications for heart disease due to the side effects two years back. I am retaining water now, despite being on Lasix medication. Is 815 pg/mL a high BNP value?

Please help.

I am sorry to learn about your increased BNP levels and previous history of heart failure. With regards to a BNP of 815 pg/mL, this is a very high reading, and in light of your previous history of heart failure, this could signify that your heart failure is not well-controlled at this point in time.

Despite variations in BNP levels from one person to another, it must be noted that with this reading in combination with your swollen abdomen and legs, fatigue, lack of appetite, and being off heart failure medications for two years now, this is a very worrying result. It is great that the swelling has responded to Lasix (Furosemide) , but this is not necessarily an indicator that your heart failure is well-controlled.

I would highly advise you to contact your cardiologist at once to seek his urgent opinion. Should you have any difficulties with breathing, chest pain, dizziness, or confusion, please seek emergency medical attention as soon as possible.

Also, it is important not to discontinue or start taking heart failure medicines without medical help. Your physician can offer some adjustments in your treatment regimen or can suggest other heart-protective medicines that will have fewer side effects.
