What are the heart risks of severe preeclampsia and HELLP?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 26-year-old woman who just gave birth to a baby at 32 weeks due to severe preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome. I was warned of the cardiac risks this has long-term, and because of my anxiety, I am obsessing about it. I am terrified that something will happen to me and that my kids will be without me. I have had one other previous pregnancy that was completely normal. This happened in my second pregnancy. I am on medication for my blood pressure as it still has not returned to normal. I am ten days postpartum. I want to know how high my risks really are, what I can do about them, and what to look out for. I have undergone blood tests and blood pressure checks. I take medications like Labetalol, Zoloft, Lorazepam, and prenatal vitamins. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand what you are going through. Hopefully, you will be fine. Have you been taking all your medications as prescribed? In what dosages were they prescribed? Most of the time, blood pressure postpartum, especially with the fact that you suffered severe preeclampsia, does not normalize at once. What has been the progression of the blood pressure readings in the past few days? This information is necessary for me to give a suggestion.
