What can be done to improve liver health after hepatitis C infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Being a 36-year-old male who was diagnosed with hepatitis C a month ago and is now in the recovery phase, I am eager to learn about post-hepatitis C care, particularly on liver health. How does hepatitis C affect the liver, and what precautions should I take to ensure good liver function and overall well-being? Are there specific dietary guidelines or lifestyle changes that can support liver health post-recovery from hepatitis C? What habits should I take to minimize the risk of liver complications in the future?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Hepatitis C is a liver viral infection that slowly damages the liver. At your age, the liver is usually well-preserved. It takes around 20 to 25 years (if untreated) to cause permanent liver damage. I am sure that before starting antiviral treatment for hepatitis C, your treating physician must have conducted an ultrasound of the abdomen to assess your baseline liver status.

Once treatment is completed, there will be no added risk from hepatitis C. I suggest you follow these general precautions to prevent yourself from reinfection:

  1. Avoid the use of shared blades, nail cutters, and tattoos from unregulated sources.
  2. Ensure that dental procedures and stitches are done at proper medical facilities.
  3. Maintain a normal diet, and avoid high-fat or high-carbohydrate diets to prevent superimposed fatty liver.
  4. Avoid alcohol to prevent alcohol-related liver disease and its associated complications.

I hope this clears your query.

Revert in case of doubts.

Thank you.
