Why does Herbst appliance appear bulky and uncomfortable to wear?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My orthodontist suggested Herbst appliance to treat my overbite as I am at the end of the growth phase. However, I feel uncomfortable wearing the appliance. I need your opinion. What are the other treatment methods? Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

A fixed functional appliance is usually prescribed for midline diastema during the end stage of the growth period. There are other options like Forsus or Advansync 2. These appliances are fixed to the mouth, appear bulkier, and make uncomfortable. You can also opt for elastics (removable), which can be manipulated. But they are less efficient, and the prognosis depends on your malocclusion. Other treatment methods include extraction of the upper two teeth and closure of spaces. This is not advisable if your profile is good. All the above treatment protocols are decided depending on the case-to-case scenario, skeletal profile, or dental profile. Please provide your profile photos.
