Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had surgery for two umbilical hernias a few months back. However, the doctor did not fix both hernias at the same time. He meshed one hernia and reduced the size of the other hernia. I am very upset regarding this. What would you suggest?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your problem.

Most likely, there has been a miscommunication between you and your doctor.

1) Having two hernias is not so uncommon.

2) Meshing is required only if it is larger than 0.8 inches.

No one meshes a small hernia. It is closed with sutures after reducing it. Reducing a hernia means placing the contents coming out of the hernia, back inside. It does not mean just tightening or making it small. So do not worry. Everything is fine. Glue application is a well-known and well-accepted alternative to stitches, that leaves very less scar marks. So he was concerned about the cosmetic outcome of the umbilicus. So after knowing all that, I think you would feel a bit better.

Hope that helps.

Thanks and regards.
