What causes high triglycerides despite daily exercise at 35?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I just got my blood test results back, and honestly, I do not even know what half of them mean. My triglyceride level came back at 312 mg/dL, and my doctor told me it was high.

The thing is, I have been going to the gym at least four times a week for the past six months, and I have cut out most fried foods as well.

Why are my triglycerides still high even though I exercise regularly at the age of 35? What else should I be doing to bring them down?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

I am sorry to hear about your triglyceride results. A triglyceride level of 312 mg/dL is considered high, but it is not uncommon for triglyceride levels to remain elevated despite regular exercise and cutting back on fried foods.

Triglycerides are affected by many factors besides physical activity, including genetics, excess body weight, diets high in refined carbohydrates or sugary foods and drinks, alcohol intake, diabetes or prediabetes, hypothyroidism, certain medications, and some kidney or liver conditions.

It would be wise to take into consideration all the food you eat because certain types of food, such as white bread, white rice, pasta, candy, and sodas, might raise your triglyceride level as well. The doctor might advise you to perform some more tests to rule out any other causes.

If your triglycerides are high, and you have been making steady lifestyle changes, but your levels still do not improve, then medicine can be prescribed based on your total cardiovascular risk. Continue to exercise, as your exercise regimen is very beneficial for your heart and general health, even if your triglyceride level has not hit the target yet.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
