What could be the cause of hip pain and cramps in the lower abdomen followed by loose stools in a 31 weeks pregnant woman?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 31 weeks and three days pregnant. I have hip pain and cramps in my lower stomach followed by loose stools.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
The symptoms need to be treated in the third trimester of pregnancy otherwise it could lead to serious consequences. You described the situation very superficially. Loose motions, cramps, and lower abdominal pain can trigger preterm labor which could be an emergency. There is no issue with a chronic hip pin but if it is recent and very severe and is present in the thigh or leg then one needs to evaluate via Doppler scan as a gravid uterus also gives gradual and chronic pain. Lower abdominal pain with loose motions needs to be resolved.
My advice:
Consult your specialist doctor, talk to them, and take medications with their consent.
- Take an oral rehydration solution (ORS) and a tablet of Metronidazole 400 mg eight hourly for five days.
- Have electronic fetal monitoring CTG (Cardiotocography) to check fetal well-being.
- If cramps feel like labor pain then please do have CTG with toco which means fetal electronic monitoring. Uterine activity should be checked by machine as well as by a gynecologist.
- In case of any labor-like pain, you need to have precautionary Dexamethasone injections to prepare for premature delivery.
- Premature labor-like pains need to be managed seriously so if you feel labor-like cramps or episodic pain that is coming and going it is better to rush to a gynecologist for a complete fetal and maternal check-up investigation and management accordingly.
Hope this helps.
Best of luck.
Thank you.
