Does a negative hiv rna pcr test at 10 days mean no risk?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had protected oral and anal sex 15 days back. I checked for condom breaks or leaks by filling the condom with water, but I did not see any water stream. There is a little drop at the tip, but I thought it was while filling the water. I underwent HIV RNA PCR test after 10 days for both HIV 1 and 2. It came back negative. Is it reliable and sensitive? Am I at risk of HIV or any other STD?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for the query.

The chances of transmission of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) by single-protected intercourse are almost nil if a condom is used properly. If used properly and there is no condom leak, the chances of transmission of HIV are almost nil. The report attached is not visible. If the tests after 10 days of exposure are negative, then the chances of the HIV tests coming positive later are almost nil. It is better to go for an HIV antibody test after 90 days of last exposure to be relieved of anxiety totally and obtain conclusive results. There are some STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) like herpes simplex virus, which can be transmitted by skin-to-skin contact or kissing or as STDs. The chances of transmission are higher if there are active lesions at the time of contact. You can also go for an STD panel test after 90 days of exposure in a reliable laboratory.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
