Can HIV spread from vaginal fluid on the face?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 33 year old male. Two days back, I met a sex worker and we were kissing each other. We had protected intercourse and used condoms. After that, she was playing with her and had vaginal fluid in her hand. She put her hand on my face and close to my nose and made me smell her vaginal fluid. After ten minutes, I felt that this situation was dangerous and so I went and washed my face. I do not know whether she had HIV or not. Can I get HIV through this way? I am very much scared. Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) spreads mainly through bodily fluids like vaginal fluid, seminal fluid, blood, saliva, mucus fluid coming in contact with our bodily fluids. Viruses cannot stay alive outside of bodily fluids as they die within milliseconds coming out as bodily fluids. The virus is not transmitted through dry surfaces. If bodily fluids are ingested immediately without any delay then there is nothing to say but politely yes, there is a chance. The doubt gets clear through getting HIV testing. PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing detects best compared with other available laboratory tests. With a time gap, there are very negligible and minimal chances of transmission and spreading.

I hope it helps.

Thank you and take care.
