Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My neighbor’s child was diagnosed with HIV at birth, and she often turns to me for advice or help. I am not sure how kids with AIDS manage their day-to-day lives, especially with school, medications, and social interactions.
I want to be helpful, but I do not know the best approach to take. Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
First, I want to express my appreciation for you for providing a healthy environment for the child. Children living with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) can lead healthy, active lives with proper care and support. You can help your neighbor develop alarms and pill organizers to ensure doses of ART (antiretroviral therapy) are never missed. They will need frequent visits to a pediatric HIV specialist for blood work. You can sometimes volunteer to take the kid to the doctor and give her parents some time to rest. Ensure her vaccinations are up to date and teach her proper hygiene to avoid secondary infection.
Help your neighbor navigate whether to disclose the child’s HIV status to teachers or school staff. Confidentiality is crucial, but trusted adults can provide support. Children with HIV may feel isolated or different. Encourage the child to participate in extracurricular activities. This fosters a sense of normalcy and social connection. She can also join a support group. Offer help, but let them decide when and how to involve you. Just tell them you are there for them, and they need to ask for your help. Do not keep asking them if they need help or not.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
