Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 45-year-old man who has been suffering from HIV for many years. Recently, I started dating someone whom I really like, and the relationship has been progressing.
Disclosure of my HIV status seems necessary when I reach this stage, but I feel really anxious about her reaction. I am afraid she will change her attitude towards me or terminate the relationship when I inform her.
Has anyone experienced something similar to this?
Have you had to disclose your HIV status to a new date?
What was your strategy in the communication, and did you do anything to make it easier?
Any advice or experience will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your query.
Thank you for getting in touch with me. I am glad that you sought advice from me.
Discussing one’s HIV status with another person, especially someone close to one’s heart, is one of the hardest things that one can do. It is perfectly normal to be apprehensive about what kind of reaction you would get.
The positive thing here is that HIV infection is something that can very well be handled today. With proper treatment and precautions such as condom usage, the chances of spreading the disease are greatly minimized. HIV cannot be contracted through daily activities.
While it may be difficult to discuss one’s HIV status, it is often the best thing to do in the end. Proper communication builds trust, and many people will appreciate that you have been honest about it despite the awkwardness of the situation. Although you cannot know how another person will react, it will always be better to start off with the truth than with anything else.
One must also realize that HIV doesn’t necessarily make someone a bad person. It is just a sickness like any other, and one should learn to accept it as such. If you find yourself choosing to share your status, then I would suggest you do so calmly and directly, and also prepare yourself to answer any questions that your partner may ask.
More importantly, remember to let your partner know that HIV is a manageable disease and that with antiviral treatment, many individuals are able to lead healthy lives while significantly reducing the chance of transmission. Ultimately, what you deserve is a partner who accepts, loves, and respects you for who you are.
I wish you all the best.
