How can life change after a recent HIV diagnosis at 29?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I just found out I am HIV positive, and I am not sure where to even start with treating this. I am 29 and pretty healthy overall, but this news has been overwhelming. The clinic said something about starting ART right away, but I have so many doubts.

  1. How does this treatment even work, and will I need to take it for the rest of my life?
  2. Also, what are the chances of side effects? My biggest worry is how this will affect my partner; we are trying to understand how to stay intimate safely.
  3. Is it true that the virus can become undetectable with treatment?
  4. On top of that, I am scared about telling my family and friends. Are there any resources or groups where I can talk to others going through the same?
  5. Also, do I need to change my diet or avoid certain activities now?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Starting antiretroviral therapy (ART) early is crucial. ART suppresses HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), helping maintain your immune health and lowering the viral load. With consistent treatment, HIV can become undetectable, meaning it cannot be transmitted to your partner (U=U: Undetectable = Untransmittable). ART is typically lifelong, with manageable side effects like nausea or fatigue, which usually improve over time.

Emotionally, connecting with others who understand your journey can help. Support groups, whether online or in your community, can help you, and you do not need to drastically change your diet, but focusing on balanced, nutritious meals and regular exercise will support your overall health. Avoid smoking, excessive alcohol, and recreational drugs, which can weaken your immune system.

I hope this helps.

Please let me know if I can assist you any further.

Take care.
