Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My aunt has been living with HIV for ten years and is feeling very sad lately. How can I take care of her, and what palliative care should I provide at this stage? I am not sure about her medications, but I want to help her feel comfortable. She has not been able to eat anything since yesterday. At 50 years old, she got this disease from her husband, who passed away two years ago. How can I support her and help her lead the rest of her life peacefully?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
I am sorry to hear about your aunt's situation. Supporting someone with human immuno deficiency virus, especially in later stages, requires both emotional and practical care. You can help her by listening to her feelings and encouraging her to seek professional support, like a counselor or support group. Be patient and respectful of her space, as she may have mood swings or need time alone.
For her physical comfort, encourage her to talk to her healthcare provider about any discomfort she feels. If she is not eating, offer small, easy-to-digest foods like smoothies or broths. Ensure she stays hydrated with water or herbal teas and create a cozy environment for her. Help her manage her medications and assist with daily activities. Lastly, consider involving family and friends to share responsibilities and look into local resources for additional support. Your presence and care can make a big difference during this time.
I hope you got an answer.
Please let me know if you need any further help.
Thank you.
