Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 53-year-old teacher and have been feeling under the weather for about a week now. It started with a mild cough and congestion, but now I have a fever and feel extremely fatigued. I recently read about human metapneumovirus and how it can cause respiratory symptoms, especially in adults.
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
HMPV (human metapneumovirus) is a known virus known since 2001, and it has been in circulation since 2001. It is seen mostly in winter and early spring days. It is a respiratory virus, as pneumo means air—it is spread through the air and affects alveoli (air sacs in the lungs). It causes inflammatory infection in the lungs. This is transmitted through air droplets and mainly affects infants, children in the pediatric age group, senior citizens above 55 to 60 years of age, and people who have weak immunity. It affects those people who have associated comorbid diseases like diabetes, hypertension, liver cirrhosis, and kidney issues.
The main symptoms are fever (mostly high-grade fever) with or without chills, cough (mainly sputum-producing, but dry cough may also be present), fatigue, difficulty in breathing (spo2 oxygen level may drop below 85 to 90 percent), and congestion. It is categorized under influenza-like infection.
As such, till now there is no vaccine present and no drugs available. However, being a virus, it is a self-limiting virus that is active for seven to 15 days and subsides on its own like other viruses. If the immune system of a person is in a compromised state, then it has more effect.
To diagnose the effect it has caused on the lungs by knowing the oxygen saturation, doing a CT scan gives an accurate image of whether the virus has infected the lungs or not, and if yes, to what extent. This virus infection is presented as opacities in the lungs and scored upon.
PCR is the test to diagnose this virus in labs. Other tests include serology testing, antigen testing, and nasopharyngeal swab testing for polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR is the most reliable test available through normal blood tests; it is very difficult to distinguish between respiratory infection-causing viruses.
Its treatment includes supportive measures like
