Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 67 years old with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and just tested positive for human metapneumovirus (HMPV) at my pulmonologist’s office.
My oxygen levels keep dropping to 88 percent despite using my usual 3L flow. I have a severe cough with thick green mucus, and my chest feels tight like it is in a vice. My rescue inhaler is not helping much, and I had to use my nebulizer six times yesterday. I also have a fever of 101.2 degrees Fahrenheit and get extremely breathless even walking to the bathroom. My usual COPD medications do not seem effective, and I increased my Prednisone to 60 mg, but I am still struggling.
Should I go to the emergency room? My last COPD hospitalization was terrible, and I am scared of going back. Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) can be more severe in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Since your oxygen levels are dropping and your need for a rescue inhaler has increased, there is a high possibility of pneumonia. It is best to visit the emergency room (ER) for further evaluation.
