How to prevent HMPV complications in a diabetic?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 50-year-old truck driver with type 2 diabetes, well-controlled on oral medications. For the past week, I have had congestion, a sore throat, and a mild fever. My cough has become worse, and I have noticed it is harder to catch my breath after climbing into my truck or walking short distances. My grandson, who visited last week, was recently diagnosed with HMPV. Could my diabetes make this infection more severe? What precautions should I take to prevent complications?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Your diabetes is controlled with medication, still, diabetics are more prone to any kind of infections. It is always better to take precautions.

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus responsible for acute respiratory infections, especially in children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of HMPV:-

Symptoms typically appear three to six days after exposure and may include:

  1. Nasal congestion.

  2. Runny nose.

  3. Sore throat.

  4. Headache.

  5. Coughing.

In severe cases, HMPV can lead to:

  1. Difficulty breathing.

  2. Wheezing.

  3. Fever.

  4. Bronchiolitis.

  5. Bronchitis or pneumonia.

The virus usually spreads through close contact with infected individuals and touching contaminated surfaces.

Treatment for HMPV infections - Most cases resolve within two to five days without specific treatment.

Management includes-

  1. Rest.

  2. Drinking plenty of fluids.

  3. Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen for fever and pair.

  4. Supplemental oxygen and fluids in severe cases.

Preventing the spread of HMPV - To protect yourself and others:

  1. Wash your hands frequently.

  2. Wear face masks in crowded areas.

  3. Avoid close contact with infected individuals.

  4. Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
