What are the common symptoms of Hodgkin lymphoma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My brother is 27 years old and recently noticed a painless swelling in the neck that has not reduced for several weeks. He also reported occasional night sweats and fatigue.

After evaluation, the doctor suggested a biopsy, and the possibility of Hodgkin lymphoma was mentioned. Blood tests showed slightly elevated ESR, and further imaging is planned.

What are the common symptoms of Hodgkin lymphoma, and how treatable is this condition when detected early?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your history and can understand your concern.

I can understand your concern.

I wish you good health and a speedy recovery for your brother. I really understand your concern about his condition, and I want to tell you that the diagnosis here depends on several factors.

Hodgkin lymphoma is often characterized by three very important features.

  1. The first is excessive sweating, where the patient may need to change their clothes during the night because of heavy sweating.

  2. The second is weight loss, typically losing more than 10 percent of body weight within less than six months without dieting or intentionally trying to lose weight.

  3. The third is a high-grade fever, particularly episodes of significant fever that occur at night.

If these three symptoms are present, they raise a strong suspicion for lymphoma. In addition, the presence of a swelling in the neck that may represent an enlarged lymph node is another concerning finding that increases the suspicion for lymphoma, but really I want to reassure you that lymphoma is a treatable condition, especially since he is still young.

Wish him good health, and I hope my answer clarifies your concern.

Please don't hesitate to ask any question at any time.

I would be happy to guide you.

Thank you.
