How can I manage HSV-2 infection after unprotected sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected sex two months ago. A couple of days later, I noticed redness, a single tiny sore, and a swollen lymph node. I tested negative for syphilis. Now, I have muscle aches, and my skin is itchy, mostly on my back. Could this be a yeast infection?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concerns and appreciate you sharing your symptoms.

Based on the signs and symptoms you have described, it is likely that you may have herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Here are common signs and symptoms of HSV-2:

  1. Itching, tingling, or a burning sensation in the vaginal or anal area.
  2. Flu-like symptoms, including fever.
  3. Swollen glands.
  4. Pain in the legs, buttocks, or vaginal area.
  5. Changes in vaginal discharge.
  6. Headache.
  7. Painful or difficult urination.
  8. A feeling of pressure in the lower abdominal area.

While it is possible that your symptoms could also be due to a fungal infection, it is important to note that fungal infections do not typically cause swollen glands.

If you are experiencing vaginal discharge, please consider the following:

  1. The color of the discharge.
  2. Its consistency.
  3. The amount (presence of blood or pus).
  4. Any associated itching or smell.

I suggest you take tablet Acyclovir 400 mg, twice a day for 14 days, or suspension Acyclovir 200 mg, applied to the area of redness and swelling. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent. If there is discharge present, I recommend performing a high vaginal swab test to rule out other potential infections.

I hope my recommendations are clear. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you.
