Can irregular sleep cause high blood pressure?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 45-year-old male. I have noticed my blood pressure readings have been consistently high. Should I be worried about hypertension? My partner has also mentioned that my snoring has worsened. Could this be related to my blood pressure issues? I am not sleeping well. How does this affect my heart health and blood pressure? Are there any specific lifestyle changes you would recommend to help lower my blood pressure and improve my sleep quality? How often should I be monitoring my blood pressure at home?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query.

I suggest you make certain lifestyle changes, including:

1. Include more salads and green leafy vegetables in the diet. This helps modulate gut activity and improves your glycemic profile.

2. Cutting down on carbs and eating a balanced diet.

3. Eating meals at regular times every day. An erratic schedule of meals worsens gut health.

4. Breathing exercises and meditation help decrease stress and improve gut health. So, daily exercise with meditation is very fruitful for improving symptoms.

5. Adequate sleep and sleeping schedules should be maintained. An erratic sleep schedule, too, worsens gut health.

If you still face problems after following the above five steps, contact your cardiologist.

Hope it helps.

Thank you.
