What causes one to feel faint while exhaling from the mouth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 19 years old. When I exhale through my mouth, I feel faint, but when I exhale through my nose, I do not experience this sensation. Additionally, I sometimes feel random sensations on my chest.

Could you please help me understand what might be causing these symptoms?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

At 19 years old, if you notice that exhaling through your mouth feels difficult or uncomfortable but breathing through your nose feels normal, and you sometimes experience random sensations in your chest, it could be due to a number of causes, such as the following:

  1. Mild airway irritation.

  2. Anxiety-related breathing changes.

  3. Acid reflux.

  4. Early respiratory issues, like asthma or bronchial inflammation.

Since chest sensations can occasionally point to underlying heart or lung conditions, it is important not to ignore them, especially if they are accompanied by shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, or coughing. You should get a medical check-up to assess your lungs, heart, and airways and avoid self-diagnosis until a doctor has evaluated you. Treatment will depend on the exact cause.

In the meantime, some general supportive measures you can follow are as follows:

  1. Breathing exercises: Practice slow, deep breathing through your nose to keep airways relaxed.

  2. Stay hydrated: Drink enough water to prevent airway dryness and irritation.

  3. Avoid irritants: Stay away from smoke, dust, strong perfumes, and pollutants.

  4. Manage reflux (if present): Avoid very spicy, oily foods, and do not lie down immediately after eating.

  5. Posture: Keep your back straight when sitting or standing to improve lung expansion.

If the doctor suspects asthma or airway inflammation, you may be prescribed an inhaler or anti-inflammatory medication. If anxiety is contributing, relaxation techniques or counseling may help. Seek immediate medical care if you develop severe shortness of breath, chest pain, or dizziness, or if symptoms suddenly worsen.

I hope that this answers your query.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.
