How to manage my low thyroid levels and excess weight?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am tired all the time, my hair is falling out, and my weight is gradually increasing. The doctor says my thyroid levels are low. I started taking medication, but I still do not feel normal. How long does it take to regain my energy? Do I have to take the medicine forever?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand the concern.

When the thyroid gland is underactive, it can take some time for the body to adjust to thyroid hormone replacement therapy.

Most individuals begin to notice improvement in energy levels, hair fall, and metabolism within four to six weeks after starting medication. However, for some people, it may take a few months to feel completely normal, especially if the dosage requires adjustment.

The doctor will usually recheck thyroid levels every six to eight weeks initially and adjust the dose accordingly until the appropriate level is achieved.

In most cases, hypothyroidism is a lifelong condition. Therefore, medication such as Levothyroxine (Thyroxine) is typically required for long-term management. The exact dose may change over time depending on thyroid function test results and clinical response.

Once thyroid hormone levels become stable, symptoms generally improve, and overall well-being is restored. It is important to take the medication consistently, preferably on an empty stomach, and attend regular follow-up appointments to ensure that thyroid levels remain well controlled.

However, please share the results of thyroid function tests, including thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroxine (T4). Also mention the name of the medication (Levothyroxine) and the current dose so that further guidance can be provided accordingly.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
