Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
As a 30-year-old male, I have been feeling down lately. My doctor told me that I have a low sperm count, which means I might have trouble having kids. This news has hit me hard, and I am struggling with major depressive disorder. I want to know what steps I can take to overcome infertility and depression. My wife and I want to start a family. Can you help me understand what options I have? Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
First of all, communicate with your partner. Share your feelings, fears, and hopes. You need to know that being depressed can be a major cause of a low sperm count. Here are some of the reasons that can cause this scenario:
Varicocele: Swelling of veins in the testicle or scrotum that can be diagnosed by doing an ultrasound scrotum.
Infection: Sexually transmitted diseases or non-sexually transmitted diseases causing epididymitis (inflammation of the coiled tube, called the epididymis, at the back of the testicle), orchitis (inflammation of one or both testicles), etc., which can be diagnosed by doing an ultrasound of the scrotum along with complete urine and a complete blood count (CBC) test.
Ejaculation problems: Drugs, retrograde ejaculation, lack of ejaculation due to diabetes (increase in blood sugar level), spinal injuries, and bladder, prostate, or urethra surgery.
Anti-sperm antibodies: Benign or malignant growth blocking the release of sperm, where undescended testicles can be diagnosed by ultrasound scrotum.
Hormone imbalances: Check for TFT (thyroid function test), testosterone, prolactin, and FSH (follicular stimulating hormone).Exposure to heavy metals or drugs; overheating of the scrotum. Habits like alcohol or smoking. Food habits like increased soy food and junk food
Also, I suggest you to check for semen completeness and review reports. Based on reports, we can plan any medicine. If medicine fails, you can proceed with IVF (in vitro fertilization) or IUI (intrauterine insemination).
I hope this helps.
Kindly revert in case of further queries.
Thank you.
