Can a healthy diet help reduce inflammation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am worried about my child. It feels like he is always catching something: one week it is a cold and sore throat that lasts for days, and the next, it is indigestion and fever. This constant cycle of infections is taking a toll on both of us. I recently read that a healthy diet can help with inflammation. Is there any truth to this? Can certain foods actually help reduce inflammation and boost his immune system? I am looking for ways to help him feel better and get sick less often.

Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Since there is no information about your child's age, I will provide general advice on how to take care of him. There are three things to consider: diet, causes, and prevention.

A healthy, balanced diet is important and should include green vegetables, fruits, homemade food (depending on what you regularly consume at home), and avoid junk food. A balanced diet needs to be planned according to age and should provide proper calories, fiber, and protein. Next, you need to identify the cause. For example, repeated exposure to environments with infections, such as coming into contact with others who are ill, can lower immunity. It is important to break this cycle so that the body has time to recover and build immunity.

Consider getting these tests done:

  1. Blood test: These include CBC (complete blood count), CRP (C-reactive protein) test, procalcitonin (PCT) test, serum iron, serum ferritin, vitamin D, serum magnesium, and serum zinc levels.
  2. Urine test: Routine analysis.

Try to avoid contact with individuals who are sick, and avoid close contact with animals and birds. If he is in school, inform the teachers to keep sick children at home, which is a standard rule in most schools. For a young child who has just started school and experiences up to six episodes of uncomplicated infections in a year, this is considered normal.

If you can provide me with more specific details about your child, such as his age, routine activities, diet, etc., I can give you more tailored advice.

I hope this information helps you.

Thanks for using icliniq and have a nice day!
