How can someone overcome sleep problems associated with stress and anxiety?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had been suffering from a sleeping problem for the past few days. Every second night, I stay fully awake or get less than four hours of sleep. Sometimes, I feel a little bit nervous before going to sleep. Why so?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

The brief duration of insomnia is usually linked to psychological problems like stress related to work, depression, etc. I have a few questions.

1. Do you take any medication for insomnia?

2. Do you suffer from any recent stress or anxiety?

3. Is there any history of chronic illness?

Please reply to the above questions.

Thanks and regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for your reply.

I do not take any medications. However, I have had some work-related stress.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

This is acute insomnia, and it is due to stress only. Subconsciously, stress-related thoughts are present, which hinders the sleep cycle. So, I suggest you follow the instructions mentioned below.

1. Try to negate job-related stress and psychologically become more stable, which would be enough to correct the present problem.

2. Do not directly take sleep medications.

3. Try mind relaxation techniques, deep breathing exercises, and try calm music before you go to bed.

I hope this has helped you.

Thanks and regards.
