How to manage irregular bleeding and avoid pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I need some guidance regarding irregular bleeding and pregnancy concerns. I had unprotected sex last month and took Unwanted-72 on the same day. After that, I experienced my normal menstrual period. Then again, I had unprotected sex and took Unwanted-72 on the same day. Now, I started having bleeding.

There is no pain, no cramps, and no other symptoms. I am confused whether this bleeding is an early period or a side effect of the emergency pill. I am also worried about the chances of pregnancy.

Should I need to take a pregnancy test, and if so, when is the right time to take a pregnancy test, at what date to get an accurate result, and I had taken carom, fennel, and cumin seeds boiled water for two days in the last week, so is it the reason I got my period early? Could you please guide me on whether this is normal and what I should do next?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

This bleeding is most likely a side effect of Unwanted-72 (Levonorgestrel), not an early period or pregnancy. Emergency pills often cause irregular or breakthrough bleeding within five to 10 days after taking them. You took Unwanted-72, and bleeding started after a few days, which fits this pattern. You already had a normal period, so pregnancy is ruled out. Taking carom, fennel, or cumin seed water does not cause periods and is not the reason for this bleeding.

Since the emergency pill was taken on the same day both times, the chance of pregnancy is very low. For complete reassurance, take a urine pregnancy test after a few days.

Testing earlier may not be reliable. No treatment is needed if bleeding is light and painless. Your next cycle may be irregular or delayed. See a doctor if bleeding becomes heavy, prolonged, or painful. This situation is common and normal after using emergency pills more than once in a cycle.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
