Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
What is new in treating Diarrhea-Predominant-Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS-D)? Both my sons are dealing with it, along with their Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and it is been a struggle. I tried the whole gluten-free and caffeine-free route, and while it seemed to help a bit, it is tough to stick to when we are traveling or out and about. Do you know if there is anything new that might make managing this a little easier? It is exhausting trying to keep track of their diets all the time, and I just want to find something that works better for them.
Kindly help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
There are several treatments for irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), including:
Lifestyle changes: Reducing stress, getting enough sleep, drinking water, and exercising regularly can help.
Diet: Avoiding gas-producing foods, gluten, and Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, And Polyols (FODMAPs) may help.
Medication: Depending on your symptoms, your doctor may recommend:
Antidiarrheal medicines: Nonprescription medicines like Loperamide (available in tablet, capsule, and solution) (antidiarrheal caplet Imodium A-D) can help.
Antidepressants: Low doses of antidepressants can block pain signals in the brain.
Anti-anxiety drugs: Medicines like tablet Clonazepam (Klonopin), tablet Diazepam (Valium), and tablet lorazepam (Ativan) can help calm you down.
Fiber supplements: A supplement Psyllium husk (Metamucil) can help with constipation.
Laxatives: Nonprescription laxatives like Magnesium hydroxide oral (Milk of Magnesia) or Polyethylene glycol oral powder (Miralax) can help with constipation.
Antibiotics: Tablet Rifaximin (Xifaxan) can decrease bacterial overgrowth and diarrhea.
Psychological therapy: Cognitive behavioral therapy and gut-directed hypnotherapy can help.
Other treatments: Peppermint oil, antispasmodics, and probiotics may help.
