Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have had severe constipation for years. Earlier, I managed without medications, but nowadays, nothing works except enemas. It started with one enema a day. Lately, I have needed more than one a day just to get relief.
Can someone at 44 safely take multiple enemas in one day for relief?
With chronic constipation, is this a short-term fix, or could it damage the bowel or affect electrolytes over time?
I am scared of becoming dependent, but I also cannot function when things completely stop. Planning my day around bathrooms is taking over my life.
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concerns.
Using enemas once in a while for severe constipation may help temporarily, but needing them every day, especially multiple times a day, is not a good long-term solution. Over time, frequent enemas may irritate the bowel, disturb body salts (electrolytes), and make it harder for the bowel to function normally on its own.
Your symptoms suggest that the constipation may be more serious than a simple slow bowel movement. Conditions such as slow bowel transit, pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C), thyroid disorders, medication side effects, or other bowel disorders may need evaluation.
A gastroenterologist can perform tests to find the actual cause and may recommend safer long-term treatments such as:
Regular laxatives like Polyethylene glycol (PEG).
Prescription medications for chronic constipation.
Pelvic floor therapy.
Diet changes and bowel-training plans.
Urgent medical attention is needed if severe abdominal swelling, vomiting, severe pain, blood in the stool, fever, or inability to pass gas develops. Most importantly, when constipation starts controlling daily life and bathroom planning, it usually means specialist evaluation is needed rather than increasing dependence on enemas.
I hope this is clear, and if you have any questions at any time, please feel free to ask.
Thank you.
