How to manage persistent itchy feet from tinea pedis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had irritation on my foot for three weeks, getting worse. I tried an ointment containing Clobetasol Propionate, Neomycin, and Nystatin, and also a Cortisone ointment, but there was no improvement. Please help, it is getting itchy.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

As per your description, it appears to be tinea pedis.

Avoid tight footwear. The cause could be touching contaminated surfaces, excess sweating, occlusive tight footwear, improper foot hygiene, wet feet for a long time, epidermal skin barrier dysfunction, humidity, or skin injury on the foot.

Symptoms can be itching, blisters on the feet, dry skin on the feet, or cracks and peeling skin of the feet. Apply Miconazole cream twice daily for six weeks. Apply Terbinafine cream (Tyza cream containing Terbinafine) at night for six weeks.

Preventive measures are as follows:

  1. Washing of the foot and toes with KZ soap (Ketoconazole-containing soap) and water, followed by drying daily, washing socks, and disinfecting shoes.

  2. Avoid sharing personal belongings.

  3. Avoid barefoot walking. Wear footwear in public places.

  4. Change socks frequently.

  5. Use shoes made with breathable materials.

  6. Maintain proper hygiene, as hygiene plays a very important role in avoiding the recurrence of infection.

  7. Keep the area clean and dry.

  8. Apply antifungal dusting powder immediately after bath for one month.

  9. Tablet Levocetirizine 5 milligrams at night after food for seven days (if itching).

  10. Do not scratch or rub the lesions.

I hope that this answers your query.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
