Are there any effective ways to eradicate itching?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am experiencing itching on the arms, armpits, chest (where I have keloid scars), upper back, neck, and scalp. I have tried using skin lotions and baby oils, but they did not resolve the problem. I also took anti-allergy medication, but it provided only mild relief and did not eradicate all itching. I observe the itching happens often during sleeping time hours, and when cockroaches are around. The itching started gradually and has been ongoing for more than three weeks now.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

From your descriptions, it seems that you are suffering from scabies. Scabies is an intensely itchy skin infestation caused by the mite.

If you can provide some pictures, it will be helpful for me to manage your condition.

The diagnosis of scabies can often be made clinically with a pruritic (itchy) rash with the itching occurring predominantly at night and characteristic linear burrows over limbs. Other family members can also be affected.

Regarding treatment;

1. On day one– Apply a single application of 5 percent Permethrin cream (antiparasitic medication) below the neck, and all over the body during the night. Leave it for 10 to 12 hours and then take a bath using HH Mite soap daily for seven days. Also, take the tablet Ivermectin (anti-parasitic medication) 12 mg single dose same day. Wash your used clothes thoroughly and use fresh clothes after the bath the next day.

2. On day two– Apply Fluticasone (corticosteroid) 0.05 percent cream twice daily for five to seven days and tablet Levocetirizine (anti-histamine) once daily for the same duration. Consult your doctor and take the medication accordingly.

I suggest you get a follow-up review after one week.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
