Is there any tablet or lotion to reduce my itching?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am living in a hostel. Some students are suffering from itching in our hostel; from them, it has spread to me also, so give me the best tablet or lotion to reduce the itching.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

What you have described is a condition called Scabies, and it spreads from one person to another, so all of the affected people in your hostel need to use the same medicine.

  • Apply Permethrin 5% lotion at bedtime.

  • Apply the lotion thoroughly from the neck down to the toes, making sure to cover the areas between the fingers, under the nails, armpits, belly button, groin, buttocks, and soles of the feet.

  • Leave it on for eight to 12 hours overnight and wash it off with soap and water the next morning.

  • Wash your clothes, bedsheets that have been soiled with socks, and any belongings after a shower, and use new ones, as the scabies mite leftovers can reside in your things.

  • Also, dry your things in hot sunlight for several hours. Items that cannot be washed should be sealed in a plastic bag for 72 hours.

  • After washing, apply a moisturizer such as petroleum jelly to reduce dryness. If certain areas are extremely itchy, you may apply Betamethasone lotion on those spots once at night for three to five days only. The Permethrin application must be repeated after one week to kill newly hatched mites.

  • Take Cetirizine 10 mg at night daily for 10 to 14 days to help control itching.

  • Please revisit me after two weeks if needed.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
