What are the causes and treatment for dry skin in children?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I would want to inquire about my four-year-old kid, who is scratching his body and has sugary, dry skin. Could you kindly tell me what this is and how I may cure it?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Based on your descriptions, it appears that your son has atopic dermatitis, which improves with age. To avoid this, you should take a few general precautions. Apply moisturizer (coconut oil) two to three times each day. Bath water should be lukewarm rather than heated. After bathing, do not touch your son's skin; it should be somewhat damp. He needs a good quality emollient twice daily; if oozing occurs, avoid ointment or cream. Corticosteroids in lotion form may be utilized. Corticosteroid cream should be given locally twice a day when there is no oozing or dry eczema after visiting your doctor or a nearby dermatologist.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
