Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 30-year-old female who recently got married and engaged in unprotected intercourse with my husband two weeks ago. Currently, I am experiencing severe itching in my vagina, and it appears red and inflamed, prompting concerns about a potential sexually transmitted issue. I would like to understand the possibilities of having contracted an infection, how to determine it, and seek advice on alleviating these symptoms. Additionally, I am interested in preventive measures for the future. Kindly provide your guidance on identifying potential infections and managing symptoms, as well as preventive strategies.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
Following unprotected intercourse, it is crucial to consider the possibility of a sexually transmitted infection (STI). The recommended tests for further evaluation include:
In the absence of an STI, a simple bacterial infection might be the cause. In such cases, I suggest you use Mupirocin IP 2.0 % w/w ointment for local application, along with Doxycycline (100 mg) twice a day for a duration of five days. If itching persists, a fungal infection should be considered, and treatment may involve applying a cream containing Clotrimazole I.P. 1 % w/w and Beclomethasone Dipropionate I.P. 0.025 % w/w locally. Additionally, for relief from itching, taking one tablet of Cetirizine at night is suggested. Maintaining good hygiene is essential. Ensure you wash your genital area twice a day using normal water, avoiding extremes of temperature. Refrain from using heavily scented or high pH soaps, as they may exacerbate the condition.
I hope this has helped you. Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.
Thank you.
