Can stress trigger my TMJ pain and jaw popping?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have a TMJ problem of clicking and popping sounds with pain sometimes and it elevates when I stress, also I want to know what the cause is.
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
This is a common condition; the causes might be genetic or maybe some form of trauma in your childhood or teens to the joint space. Sometimes, dental causes of pain may also be present. So, it is better to get your dental checkup done regularly. If there are no dental issues, there will be some stress on the joint, so definitely. No surgical correction or treatment plan exists for TMJ (temporomandibular joint) clicking or popping. If it is dislocated, that would be a different issue.
Here is what you can do:
- Relax, detox, meditate, and take the muscle relaxant for three days.
- Take painkillers if you feel the pain is increasing.
- Deep breathing exercises definitely help, too.
- Apply Diclofenac and Methyl salicylate (as a painkiller), Linseed oil (as an anti-inflammatory), and Menthol (as a cooling agent) gel if possible.
- A muscle-relaxation tablet for TMJ that will help alleviate the symptoms.
- Tablet Aceclofenac and Paracetamol 500 mg twice for three days after food.
Do not worry; it happens very commonly because of stress. What you can do is relax your mind and meditate. This helps with joint relief; alternatively, if the pain increases, you can take pain relief. Tablet Ketorolac-DT (Ketorolac tromethamine) when needed.
I hope this helps.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
