How to manage joint pain caused by walking and running?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello Doctor,

I am an 11-year-old female experiencing pain in my knees and ankles. My knees hurt when kneeling down or walking down the stairs, and my ankles hurt when pressure is applied.

The pain started when I was running with my friend. My knees suddenly began to hurt, and I had trouble walking for the next few minutes. For the rest of the day, the pain spread from both knees to both ankles.

I have not had any kind of surgery, and there was no trauma that caused injury to my knees.

The next day, I twisted my ankle while walking down the stairs, which made the pain worse. I have already informed my mother.

What could this be? What should I do?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

From what you are describing, it could be one of the following two possibilities:

Weakness due to poor appetite, which seems to be the most likely cause as your symptoms are acute. You can try consuming nutritious and natural foods and observe if there is any improvement.

Arthritis is a less likely possibility. To confirm arthritis, your symptoms should be chronic. If your symptoms persist for more than two weeks, I advise you to get evaluated for arthritis.

I suggest the following for pain:

Paracetamol (Analgesic orAntipyretic) 500 milligrams.

Ibuprofen (Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug - NSAID) three times a day for up to five days.

Thank you.
