What could cause severe leg swelling after an accident?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My friend's wife had an accident while riding a motorbike and injured her leg. The swelling is becoming quite severe. She is currently taking Diclofenac 75 mg. What could be the cause of this? I hope it is nothing serious. I have attached the image for reference.
Please guide.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concerns.
The possible causes of swelling include:
-
Soft tissue injury: A contusion or hematoma (bleeding under the skin or within the muscles) can lead to significant swelling and bruising.
-
Fracture: A broken bone, especially if there’s pain upon movement or weight-bearing, visible deformity, or swelling that continues to worsen.
-
Infection (cellulitis): Characterized by red, hot, and painful skin.
-
Compartment syndrome (emergency): Swelling inside a muscle compartment that restricts blood flow, leading to severe pain, tightness, numbness, or pale or cold toes. This condition is a surgical emergency.
I recommend taking a digital X-ray of the leg, including both AP (anterioposterior) and lateral views.
Management plan:
-
Continue taking Diclofenac 75 mg one tablet in the morning and one tablet at night for five days.
-
Take Danzen DS (Serratiopeptidase) one tablet in the morning and one tablet at night for seven days to reduce tissue inflammation and swelling.
-
Take Augmentin 1 g (Amoxicillin 875 mg and Clavulanic acid 125 mg) one tablet in the morning and one tablet at night for five days. This antibiotic will help prevent infection.
-
Take Omeprazole 20 mg, one tablet, 30 minutes before breakfast, for two weeks.
After following this medication plan, I hope that the swelling and pain will subside. Please share the X-ray report with me to determine if there is any fracture. If the pain persists, I recommend that she visit the emergency department.
I hope this answers your query. Feel free to reach out anytime.
Thank you.
