I am worried about my 15-year-old's diet. My child loves eating junk food like burgers, fries, chips, candy, and soda. This junk food is affecting their brain development and function. They seem to have trouble focusing in school and their mood can be unpredictable. As a mom, I want to make sure I am giving them the proper nutrition to support their cognitive abilities and mental health during these crucial teenage years. I have a few questions.

Avoiding junk food is good for your health. The adolescent age group, who are even emotionally difficult to convince, needs to be motivated to a nutritional diet. Food selection is based mainly on availability, convenience, and time, rather than food value. Fast food joints are mainly patronized by adolescents. These spoil the appetite for regular meals and are high in calories and low in nutrients.
A nutrient-rich food:
1. Helps in achieving rapid growth and full growth potential.
2. Helps in timely sexual maturation.
3. Ensures adequate calcium deposition in the bones and helps in achieving normal bone strength.
4. Establishes good eating habits and sets the tone for a lifetime of healthy eating. This prevents obesity, osteoporosis (weak bones due to deficiency of calcium), and diabetes in later life.
A balanced diet should contain:
1. Proteins are of greatest importance in nutrition. Proteins are required for bodybuilding and help in the repair and maintenance of body tissues.
2. Fats are high-energy foods and a source of energy. They also make the food more palatable and provide fat-soluble vitamins.
3. Carbohydrates form the major component of most diets and are the main source of energy.
4. Vitamins and minerals are required in small quantities. They do not yield energy but enable the body to use other nutrients and also play an important role in the growth, repair, and regulation of vital body functions.
5. Requirements for iron and calcium are particularly increased in adolescence due to rapid physical growth during adolescence.
6. Calcium needs during adolescence are greater than they are in either childhood or adulthood because of a rapid increase in lean body mass and skeletal growth.
7. Zinc is especially important in adolescence because of its role in growth and sexual maturation. Some sources of zinc are grains, nuts, meat, cheese, and milk.
A young person should eat a diet balanced across the five food groups. They should eat:
1. Plenty of fruits and vegetables.
2. Adequate quantities of rice and other cereals.
3. Some milk and dairy products such as yogurt and cheese.
4. Meat, fish, poultry, eggs, nuts, and legumes.
In addition, they should:
1. Choose foods that are low in salt.
2. Limit foods that contain a lot of fat or sugar.
During teen years, proper nutrition helps with both physical health and mental health.
