This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I want to know the treatment alternatives for arthroscopic knee surgery and corticosteroid injections, which are effective in the long-term and are nonsurgical and conservative. Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Treatment alternatives for arthroplasty knee surgery and steroid injections can be opted when they are not effective. There might be some truth regarding inefficiency or side effects of them but I suggest you understand the following.

  1. Arthroscopic lavage on its own is of minimal use but arthroscopic debridement for mechanical symptoms and recurrent effusions is recommended. It should be differentiated from arthroscopic lavage as a means of altering the natural history of the disease.

  2. Steroid injections are also useful in recurrent effusions and inflamed joints as this will provide lasting relief of pain and swelling better than NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) in the short term. It has to be noted that it will not alter the natural history of the disease.

As there are many misleading suggestions and statements regarding the treatment strategies, I advise you to go through the basic advantages of arthroscopic surgery and steroid injections and then you can choose alternatives.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
