Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have constipation. I took a stimulant laxative yesterday and am wondering if I can take one again today because it did not have the desired effect. I think my physician gave me Docusate sodium. It was a round red pill.
Kindly suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Suppose you took a stimulant laxative (like Bisacodyl or Senna) yesterday and it did not work. In that case, it is usually best to wait before taking another dose, as taking too much can lead to cramping, dehydration, or dependence.
What you can do instead:
Try a different laxative type: Since you took Docusate sodium (a stool softener), it may take a day or two to work. You can try an osmotic laxative like Polyethylene glycol (MiraLAX) instead, which draws water into the intestines to soften stool.
Drink plenty of water it helps stool softeners work better.
Increase fiber intake like fruits (prunes, pears), vegetables, and whole grains.
Gentle physical activity like walking can stimulate bowel movements.
When to take another stimulant laxative?
If you still have not had a bowel movement by tomorrow, you can take another stimulant laxative (follow dosage instructions).
If you have severe bloating, pain, or no bowel movement for several days, consult a doctor.
I hope this information helps you.
Take care.
