Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have never had irregular periods, but recently I missed my periods. So I wanted to ask if we can get periods in the first month after having Levonorgestrel and then miss them in the next month. I want to specify that I had Levonorgestrel within three to four hours of the intercourse. Then I had bleeding for five days after one week. But later, I did not get periods. So it has already been one week since my periods are missed. Can you tell me why it is happening that I had bleeding in the first month and missing periods now? Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query

Levonorgestrel hormonal contraceptive pills interfere with the normal menstrual cycle and inhibit conception by inhibiting ovulation or fertilization or implantation etc. You get withdrawal bleed, but it depends on how early the body gets rid of the hormonal response you had informed of Levonorgestrel. After withdrawal bleeding, it is unpredictable when you get periods due to individual body response. I suggest you take serum beta human chorionic gonadotropin for proper pregnancy status. The most probable result will be negative; as soon as you get negative results, you can have a menstrual induction tablet Norethisterone 10 mg twice daily for five days, and wait for bleeding for the next one to two weeks. Again next cycles could be unpredictable post-pill due to hormonal effects. You can have combined oral contraceptive pills for three months to regulate cycles.

Please follow up for further assistance.

Thank you.
