Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am currently only taking Levothyroxine for hypothyroidism and Diazepam for anxiety. I would like to add pomegranate extract that has 40 % ellagic acid. Is it safe to take this supplement with my current medicine?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query. To my knowledge, there is no literature evidence to support the interaction between pomegranate extract and either Levothyroxine or Diazepam. There is enough literature that says pomegranate juice inhibits the CYP3A group of enzymes in the liver which inhibit the metabolism of many drugs and elevate their concentration in the blood leading to drug toxicity. Since how long you are taking and you will be taking Diazepam I am not sure. As Diazepam is also metabolized by closely related enzymes in the liver I suggest that when taking pomegranate extract. If your anxiety is under control you can discuss with your doctor an alternative medicine that is milder and safer for long-term usage. At this point, I recommend not to take them together. Though not enough literature support this but pomegranate extract inhibit the group of enzymes in the liver which may increase the levels of Diazepam in the blood.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
