Could Risperidone cause lighter periods in a 19-year-old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 19 years old. My periods have been changing dates and bleeding less for the past five years. Last year, I was taking an I Pill around once a month. I am currently on Frext and Risdone, and I have been bleeding less and less with each menstrual cycle.

I engaged in oral sex last week, and I am unsure if there was any sperm near the vagina. Is it possible that I could be pregnant, or is it a problem with my periods?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

It is understandable for you to be concerned about getting pregnant, as nobody wants an unwanted pregnancy. The possibility of pregnancy occurring follows unprotected vaginal and ejaculatory sex occurring within your fertile window (that is, 48 hours before and after your ovulation).

The semen needs to be ejaculated inside the vagina, as this will help maintain both the quantity and quality of semen required for spontaneous pregnancy to occur. Semen ejaculated outside the vagina or on a finger or in the buccal cavity would already have its membrane integrity damaged and will not have a significant quantity, even if such a finger is placed around or inside the vagina.

Therefore, the oral sex you had and the possibility of having had some drops around your vagina cannot result in pregnancy. The decrease in your bleeding is related to the medication you are using and not pregnancy. Risdone (Risperidone) has a side effect of causing irregular or light periods in individuals on the medication.

So, the lighter period you are having is a result of that and not pregnancy. You are not pregnant. The lighter menstrual period is a side effect of the Risdone (Risperidone) you are taking.

I hope that this answers your query.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
