What do lipid changes mean with severe left axis deviation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My father is 66 years old and has no chest pain or any other heart problem but did routine tests. The ECG shows normal sinus rhythm and severe left axis deviation, and the lipid profile shows serum cholesterol - 209 mg/dL, HDL (high-density lipoprotein) - 33 mg/dL, HDL ratio - 6.33 mg/dL, serum triglycerides - 218 mg/dL, LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol - 132.40 mg/dL, and fasting sugar - 193 mg/dL. Is this a problem? I am worried. Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

We welcome you to the icliniq. com.

I appreciate the confidence you place in me for your healthcare consultation. The problems are being overweight and raising blood sugar. Please tell me what medicines you are taking so that I can guide you accordingly.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the quick reply; I really appreciate it. I am currently taking Metolar (Metoprolol Tartarate) 50 mg, Glycomet-GP (Glimepiride and Metformin), and TG TOR (Atorvastatin). I used to take them every day, but my cholesterol came under 200 mg/dL after taking them on alternate days. Is this something serious? Is there any heart condition, or does the ECG (electrocardiogram) suggest any abnormality?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As he is diabetic, he should continue taking a statin for cholesterol (tablet Rosuvastatin 10 mg once a day). His fasting blood sugar is high, he should monitor blood sugar daily or a few days a week for one to two weeks both fasting and random, and then modify medicines accordingly. HbA1c (hemoglobin A1c) levels should be done to assess sugar control over the last two to three months. ECG shows left axis deviation, which has many causes like rhythm abnormality, and left ventricular hypertrophy. Please send me his ECG. Also, tell whether he has hypertension or not. I hope your query got resolved. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries. Thank you.

Hello,

Once more, thank you for allowing us to be of service to you.

We value the high level of confidence you have in us! The ECG shows left axis deviation. No other specific abnormality. Please keep a check on your blood pressure. Keep it near 120/80 mm of Hg. Control the blood sugar levels. Continue taking statins. Thank you for choosing icliniq. I am happy to help you and will always be available whenever you need me at icliniq.com.
