How to manage green stool associated with liver disease?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor, I have liver disease and significantly elevated ammonia levels, for which I take Lactulose three times a day. This treatment has resulted in multiple hospital visits. Recently, I have noticed that my stool is green, which has become a concern. While I am aware that Lactulose can cause diarrhea, my stools remain green even when they are more formed. Since I do not consume a large amount of vegetables, I am unsure of the cause. Could this indicate a more serious issue? I am currently under the care of a hepatologist but would appreciate your perspective as well. Should I be concerned about this change? Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to iCliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Regarding your symptoms and the diagnosis of liver disease, the presence of green stool following defecation could likely be attributed to your lactulose intake. Lactulose accelerates digestion, which can prevent bile from being fully broken down, sometimes leading to green-colored stool. Additionally, liver dysfunction can impact bile metabolism, occasionally resulting in a greenish hue in the stool. Given your medical history, I do believe this warrants further investigation. I recommend you undergo a magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) test and share the results with me. It is also important to follow up with your hepatologist for ongoing care.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
