Lactulose

Lactulose is a synthetic sugar used as a laxative to treat constipation. It is also used to treat high levels of ammonia in the blood, which is a complication of hepatic encephalopathy (liver disease). It draws water into the large intestine, thus making the stool soft and preventing constipation.
