Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 20-year-old, and I have loose kneecaps. When I bend my leg, they stick out and feel very loose. Is there a way to fix this looseness, and how much should they pop out when my leg is bent? Please guide me.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I can see from your pictures (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity) that the knee cap(s) are prominent. Still, the main concern is whether you experience a sensation of the knee caps popping out (dislocating) when engaging in twisting and turning movements during physical activities. The prominence may be attributed to the underdevelopment of the VMO (vastus medialis obliquus) muscle, and there appears to be hollowness on the inside of the knee cap. To gain a better understanding, it would be helpful to have a picture of your legs from the front while standing with your feet together. This will allow me to assess if any abnormal leg alignments may predispose you to patellofemoral problems (issues related to the kneecap and thigh bone).

If you have not experienced knee cap dislocation issues and can participate in sports without problems, there may be no cause for immediate concern.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
