Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My baby boy is 5 months old and his weight is only 11.02 pounds and he is not that much active. Every time he is under sleep. What is the reason behind it?
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Please note that a weight of 11.02 pounds is slightly on the lower end for a 5-month-old child.
Common causes are:
If your baby was born prematurely or with a low birth weight, growth and energy levels might still be catching up. This can lead to lower weight and reduced activity compared to other babies his age.
If your baby is not getting enough breast milk or formula, it could affect weight gain and energy. Ensure he is feeding adequately, and check for any issues with latching or bottle feeding.
Sometimes, conditions like lactose intolerance or other digestive issues can prevent babies from absorbing nutrients properly, leading to slower weight gain.
Babies can develop anemia, which can cause symptoms like fatigue, reduced appetite, and low energy. Blood tests can determine if your baby has low hemoglobin levels, which might require treatment.
Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) can cause reduced energy, excessive sleepiness, and slow growth in infants. A simple blood test can check thyroid hormone levels.
Ongoing infections (even mild ones) can make babies less active and more tired than usual.
Other metabolic or genetic conditions can also affect growth and energy, but these are less common.
An immediate check-up with the blood tests is required.
Monitor feeding and diapers: Track how much he is feeding and the number of wet diapers daily, as this provides clues about hydration and feeding adequacy.
I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.
Thank you.
