Why are the hemoglobin level and platelet count low?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My Hb level has been low for the last two years. I was COVID positive, and now all the symptoms have gone, but my CBC shows an Hb level of 7.5 g/dL, platelets of 47000 per mm³, WBC of 12100 per mm³, and lymphocytes of 46%. Currently, I am taking the tablet Caripill and the syrup Ferium. Is there any severe cause behind this?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. The increased WBC count (white blood cell) suggests infection, and you need a course of appropriate antibiotics for that. Your Hb (hemoglobin) levels are low, and if they fall further to five to six, you will need a blood transfusion. The platelet count is also below normal. It can be due to dengue or another cause. I suggest you get a dengue NS1 (virus nonstructural protein 1) antigen blood test. It will show if you have dengue or not.

For the low Hb, I would suggest you take a proper course of iron tablets after consulting a physician in person. I would also like to know your family medical history in detail. Does anyone in your family have thalassemia? Or any blood disorder? After careful evaluation, your doctor will prescribe medicines to normalize the levels. I also suggest you include iron-rich food in your diet.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert in case of further queries.
