I suffer from painless throat lumps after clearing HPV. Can it cause throat cancer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have observed lumps at the back of my throat, behind the palatopharyngeal arch. Despite no pain or illness, I have been managing allergies for months. Additionally, I tested positive for HPV 16 a year ago but am now clear. I am concerned about the possibility of throat cancer or other issues. Please help.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

After reviewing the pictures (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), there is nothing to worry about. The demarcated bumps indicate lymphoid follicles, often inflamed due to factors like acid reflux or environmental triggers. If you are experiencing throat dryness and irritation, it could be related to acid reflux, requiring appropriate treatment to reduce inflammation. These lymphoid follicles are not linked to cancer, which typically presents with ulceration and difficulty or pain while swallowing.

For relief, I suggest saltwater gargles (five to six times a day), avoiding spicy and carbonated foods, as well as tea and coffee. Regular meals on time can also help.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to ask if you have any further questions.

Thank you.
