When should a person see a doctor for a vaginal lump?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently discovered a lump inside my vagina, positioned in the middle. My mother believes it could be a cyst, but it does not look like one to me. The lump feels hard in the center, softer on the sides, and painful to the touch. I am quite worried, especially since I have not found much information online. Is it possible that I may have forgotten a tampon inside, or could it be something else?

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

A forgotten tampon can sometimes become lodged in the vaginal canal, leading to pain, discomfort, or a feeling of fullness. This condition, known as tampon retention, may also cause an unpleasant odor or abnormal discharge. However, other possibilities include cysts, abscesses, or infections, which can present as painful lumps. Since the lump is hard in the center and softer on the sides, it’s essential to have it evaluated by a doctor to determine the exact cause.

Seeing a healthcare professional promptly is the best course of action. If a tampon is retained, they can safely remove it and check for any signs of infection. If it is something else, such as a cyst or an abscess, appropriate treatment can be provided. Try to avoid touching or pressing the area excessively, and seek medical attention as soon as possible for a proper diagnosis and peace of mind.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
