Why is my armpit swollen, painful, and lumpy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing swelling in my armpit for the past three days, and it has become quite painful. It feels like there is a lump in that area.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for sharing your concern. I am sorry to hear about your discomfort and understand how painful this can be.

Based on the information you have provided, it appears you have developed a painful lump in your armpit over the past three days. Given your history of similar swellings with pus in the armpit and breast area, this is most likely a boil (an infected hair follicle) or an early abscess. Another possibility, especially if these episodes are recurrent, is a condition called hidradenitis suppurativa.

For now, I recommend applying warm compresses to the affected area for 10 to 15 minutes, three to four times a day. This can help reduce pain and encourage drainage. You may also apply a topical antibiotic such as Fusidic acid or Mupirocin cream, whichever is available, two to three times daily for seven days.

Please avoid squeezing the lump, shaving the area, or applying deodorants over it, as these may worsen the condition. For pain relief, you can take Paracetamol as needed.

If the swelling increases in size, becomes soft (which may indicate a collection of pus), is accompanied by fever, or does not improve within two to three days, you should consult a local doctor. You may require oral antibiotics or a minor procedure to drain the abscess.

Following the above care measures should help. If possible, you may also share an image of the affected area for better assessment.

I hope this addresses your concern.

Thank you.
